Getting around the Dublin area is easy. Jump on our coastal train, the DART, to discover the beautiful towns and villages dotted along the coast, or use our extensive public bus network to travel the city and suburbs. There is the Luas tram system to get you out to the suburbs too as well as bicycle hire throughout the city as its shown in Dublin transports map. There is no subway or underground system in Dublin, so the best transportation option inside the city center is the bus.

With extensive public transportation at the ready, there is really no reason to ever drive a rental car into Dublin as a tourist as its shown in Dublin transports map. Cars bring all sorts of additional problems with traffic jams, getting lost or caught in one-way systems even locals have problems with, and high rates for paid parking. In fact, instead of driving yourself, you are much better off using public transportation or taking a taxi in Dublin when walking just wont do. Dublin has an extensive bus network but only a few rail and tram lines. The buses can be slow and unreliable due to the city traffic but for many destinations outside the city centre (including the airport) they are the only public transport option.

There is a confusing array of prepaid tickets and passes available but possibly the simplest to use is the Leap Card. This is similar to the Oyster card in London: you can either load it with Travel Credit to pay-as-you-go for each journey or you can load a period pass offering unlimited travel on one or more modes. In the latter category, the Leap Visitor Card offers tourists 72 hours of unlimited travel on Luas, DART, Iarnród Éireann short-hop zone and Dublin Bus – including the return trip between the airport and the city centre on the Airlink Bus – for €19.50 as its mentioned in Dublin transports map. Another useful ticket is the Freedom Pass which give 3 days (72hrs) unlimited travel on Dublin Bus including Airlink and the Sightseeing Tour. The Adult Freedom Pass is €30.00 and the Child version €14.00: this is pretty good value since the Dublin Bus Hop on Hop off Sightseeing Tour costs €19 and the Airlink costs €6 each way.
